How Murphy’s Law Tested Me—Part 3: Finding Peace in Chaos
The Hurricane, Missed Flight, and a New Beginning
Finally, I arrived at my hotel, exhausted but ready to relax. I thought a soak in the jacuzzi would help—but the jacuzzi wasn’t hot. At all. I waited for it to heat up, but nope, nothing. At that point, I just shrugged. It had been that kind of week.
I had bigger things to worry about, like my flight to South Asia the next morning for my 300-hour Yoga Teacher Training.
But as I walked to Target near the hotel to pick up some last-minute things, I got smacked in the face by flying debris from the incoming hurricane. I grabbed my vitamins, shampoo, conditioner, makeup (for some reason), and kombucha, and called a car. There was no way I was getting caught in that storm.
When I got back to my room, I decided to double-check the visa requirements for my destination. And guess what? The information I had about getting a visa on arrival was wrong. I frantically searched for ways to expedite it, but there was no way I was making my flight.
I fell asleep that night, fully knowing I wasn’t going anywhere the next morning.
The next day, I woke up with one question in my mind: What now? I even started looking up flights to Turkey, desperate to avoid staying in the U.S. for the next two months. Then, out of nowhere, a wave of peace washed over me. The message was clear: Be still.
I called my best friend and told her I was coming over after I stopped by the airport. Once there, I was able to reschedule my flight for a week later. I even checked with the yoga school, and they confirmed I could still attend, even if I arrived five days late.
Once I arrived at my friend’s house, I felt at peace. I spent the day relaxing and researching options for dental work while I was abroad. Turns out, the country I was headed to was one of the top five places for affordable dental care. I reached out to a few friends for recommendations and found a clinic.
What’s more, the clinic told me they could extend my visa for 60 days for medical purposes. Suddenly, a whole new world of possibilities opened up. Not only could I complete my yoga course and get my dental work done, but I’d have time to meditate at the ashram.
What started as a disaster turned into a blessing. Here’s how I found peace amidst the storm.
