After reflecting on everything that went wrong (and right) during that crazy week, I’ve come away with two key lessons:
1. Practice noticing and awareness. We often receive subtle messages—those gut feelings—but we choose to ignore them until it’s too late. This week reminded me to pay attention to those feelings, to the signs, and to adjust accordingly.
2. Be still. When life feels like a storm, don’t try to fight it. Find a safe place to sit and be still. Cooler heads prevail, and when you stop resisting, you’re able to receive the next message and chart the best course forward.
In all my travels (and I’ve been to about 25 countries so far), this was by far the most chaotic experience. But it’s also the one that has taught me the most.
The only time I truly lost my cool was over the laundry situation, which showed me just how much having clean clothes is a priority when I travel. Moving forward, I’m making sure that’s always at the top of my list. And honestly, that’s kind of cute and beautifully human.
I gently encourage you to go with the flow of life.
With love,
Shane
